Tapestry Church cares about the faith and development of all people, especially the youngest among us. We believe that as a community we are all a part of the growth and formation of our children and youth. Through relational ministries we nurture our young people on their faith journeys and encourage them to keep questioning and learning.

Sunday Morning Experience/Opportunities

Sunday mornings are an important piece in the community at Tapestry. Gleaning from religious and faith formation research we encourage the whole family to worship together on Sunday mornings. Youth are as much a part of the congregation as anyone else. There are opportunities to help with worship elements: whether reading scripture, serving communion, handing out bulletins, leading the call to worship, or performing music. It is not uncommon for the youth to be found sitting together in worship on a Sunday morning. Having the youth present in worship provides them with an understanding of the worship experience and gives them tangible ways to connect with and praise God with others of all ages.

Youth Group

Youth Group, for grades 5 through 12, is held weekly on Sunday evenings from 4-6pm, during the school year.  We often meet in homes of youth who are involved in our program. Sometimes events are joint with Kid’s Club or are outings. Activities include study tie, group games, service projects, dinners, and more. During the summer, different members of the congregation host the youth group for faith-centered fun.

Mission Trip and Service Opportunities

Annually, middle and high school youth have the opportunity to service either our local community or the people of Appalachia. Middle Schoolers have a local experience and serve in various ways. Most recently, this has included food pantries, farms, facilities for the elderly, and schools. High Schoolers have an out-of-state experience doing home repairs for families in central Appalachia with Appalachia Service Project.

Christian Education

Youth have one-off lessons, short-term small groups, and Bible study opportunities throughout the year in addition to lessons during Youth Group. Youth are encouraged to attend Christian Education opportunities that are available through our Adult Christian Education offerings as well.

Youth have at least two retreats each year, a Fall Retreat and a January Retreat. The Fall Retreat is more laidback and focuses on group bonding and fellowship. The January Retreat is used as a time to plan for Youth Sunday that happens in the spring. Other retreats are sometimes offered in addition to these.

Youth Sunday

Each year the Youth have the opportunity to plan and lead a worship service on Sunday morning. Youth take on all of the leadership roles, pick their own theme, and create all of the worship elements for that morning. This usually happens in the spring.

Tapestry Camp is an important part of the life of the church. Each summer, kids and youth spend time together learning about God, experiencing nature, sharing songs and skits around the campfire, and building lasting relationships. Camp usually happens the end of May or beginning of June.

Seekers (Confirmation Class)

This is offered once a year for 5th and/or 6th grade (this age decision is offered to families at the discretion of the Director of Children and Youth). Seekers has been offered in many ways, sometimes as a once a month meeting for an entire school year, sometimes as a once a week class over the course of a few months. The class focuses on what it means to be a Christian, what it means to be a Disciple of Christ, what it means to be baptized, and what it means to be a member of Tapestry Church. The class culminates in the discernment of each youth in whether they feel called to be baptized and a decision on whether they want to become a member of Tapestry Church.
